A denture or a complete denture is an appliance that is inserted in the mouth. Dentures replace natural teeth and help to provide support for cheeks and lips. Typical dentures are made of acrylic and will be fabricated in one of two ways.
Conventional dentures are made after all teeth have been extracted and gum tissue has healed. On the other hand, an immediate denture will be fabricated and inserted immediately following extortion of the teeth while the gum tissues heal under the denture. An upper denture usually has flesh-colored acrylic that covers the roof of the mouth. A lower denture leaves room for the tongue with its horseshoe shape.
The teeth of a denture are usually made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of the two. They can be made to fit over endodontically treated teeth. A complete denture can be attached to dental implants. This allows for a more secure fit.
Over a normal course of time, dentures will begin to wear and need to be replaced or reclined. This is to ensure that jaw alignment remains normal. The alignment slowly changes as the extraction of the teeth often leads to the bone and gum ridges receding and shrinking. It is still important for anyone who has dentures to regularly visit their dentist so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change.
